The use of high-resolution LED walls and screens on set is currently heralding a small revolution in the film and media industry. Instead of shooting in front of a greenscreen and adding backgrounds in post-production, digital imagery is brought directly on set with the help of large display technologies. This makes shooting more flexible and precise and opens up new creative scope for film and media productions in many areas. Team members can work on productions in real time even without being "on set" so creative decisions can be made collaboratively. Various technologies are used, such as motion capture to track camera movement or the VPET toolset developed at Animationsinstitut to interact with virtual elements. In fall 2020 an approximately 7*4m LED wall was set up on campus in combination with several smaller, mobile LED units, which primarily served as lighting references. For several weeks, students of Filmakademie as well as the R&D Team of Animationsinstitut, gained hands-on experience in dealing with this innovative technology and were able to test and adapt their workflows during multiple productions. The "highlight" was the Set Extension Workshop, which brings together students from the fields of animation/visual effects, camera and production design every year.
